Temperature Sensor for Karting: My First Prototype

After weeks of design work and bench testing, I’ve finally reached the first prototype of my new temperature sensor for the front wheels of a kart. The idea comes from a real need: having a simple, intuitive, and above all quick-to-install tool, without the hassle of cables and complicated control units.

How the sensor works
At the heart of the system is an infrared sensor that reads the tire temperature in real time. The data is immediately translated into a multicolor LED, allowing the driver or mechanic to instantly understand the tire’s condition:
🔵 Blue → cold tire
🟢 Green → optimal temperature
🔴 Red → overheated tire
I wanted to focus on a clear, visual indication—perfect for anyone who needs quick feedback without checking displays or complex telemetry systems.

Why this project
When fine-tuning a kart setup, tire temperature is one of the key parameters: it affects grip, wear, and consistency. However, many current systems require invasive installations or impractical wiring. My goal is to create a plug-and-play sensor that can be mounted and removed quickly, ideal for both hobby drivers and those who perform frequent testing.

Next step: the track
Now comes the most exciting part: taking it to the track and seeing how it performs in real conditions. I’m really looking forward to testing the sensor’s responsiveness and accuracy throughout a full session.
